Laser Hair Reduction

Laser Hair Reduction

Laser hair reduction is a safe, long-lasting solution for unwanted hair on the face and body. Using targeted laser energy, the treatment selectively damages hair follicles to significantly reduce hair growth over a course of sessions. It is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic laser procedures, offering a practical alternative to repeated shaving, waxing, or threading.

How Laser Hair Reduction Works

Laser hair reduction is based on the principle of selective photothermolysis. The laser emits a specific wavelength of light that is absorbed by melanin (the pigment in hair). This energy is converted to heat within the hair follicle, damaging the follicular stem cells and reducing the follicle's ability to produce new hair. Since the laser targets melanin in the hair, a contrast between hair colour and skin tone influences treatment parameters.

Only hairs in the active growth phase (anagen) are effectively targeted during each session, which is why multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart are required to achieve comprehensive reduction.

Common Treatment Areas

  • Face: upper lip, chin, cheeks, sideburns, and neck.

  • Underarms and bikini area.

  • Legs, arms, and hands.

  • Back, chest, and abdomen.

  • Neck and jawline in men.

Laser Technologies Used

The appropriate laser is selected based on the patient's skin type, hair colour, and the area being treated. Diode lasers, Nd:YAG lasers, and alexandrite lasers each offer specific advantages for different skin and hair combinations. The Nd:YAG laser is particularly suitable for darker skin tones, offering a safer profile for Indian skin types.

The Treatment Process

1. Pre-Treatment Preparation

The area should be shaved 24 hours before the session. Avoid sun exposure, waxing, and threading for at least 4 weeks prior. A patch test may be performed before the first full session.

2. Laser Session

A cooling gel or integrated cooling is applied to protect the skin. The laser handpiece is passed over the treatment area, delivering precise pulses. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild snapping or warm feeling. Session duration depends on the area being treated — small areas take minutes, larger areas may take up to an hour.

3. Post-Treatment Care

Mild redness and a warm sensation are common for a few hours post-treatment. Sun protection and avoidance of heat exposure for 48 hours are recommended. Shedding of treated hairs typically occurs over 1–3 weeks after each session.

Benefits of Laser Hair Reduction

  • Long-lasting reduction in hair growth with each session.

  • Precision targeting of hair follicles without damaging surrounding skin.

  • Reduces ingrown hairs and skin irritation from repeated shaving or waxing.

  • Suitable for large and small areas of the body and face.

  • Safe and effective for Indian skin tones when appropriate laser technology is used.

What to Expect

Most patients require 6–8 sessions spaced 4–8 weeks apart for the face, and 8–10 sessions for body areas, to achieve significant hair reduction. Hormonal conditions such as PCOS may require more sessions and periodic maintenance. Laser hair reduction significantly reduces hair, though complete permanent removal is not always achievable in all patients.
